Source: British Columbia Climate Action Plan
The British Columbia Climate Action Plan provides a set of mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate change impacts in the short run. These strategies are summarized below.
Invest in new ideas and solutions
- In 2008 $94.5M will be invested in research intensive universities to address climate change.
- The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions brings together experts from research universities to undertake research and promote viable mitigation and adaptation options.
- Invest $3M to test carbon capture technology.
- Bioenergy Network will encourage R&D in wood-waste cogeneration, biofuel and wood pellet production.
- The Innovative Clean Energy Fund will provide funding to encourage commercialization of clean energy technology.
Protect forests
- Since 2001 more than $600M committed to mitigate pine beetle infestation, while pine beetle infestations have been directly linked to climate change.
- Plant an additional 60M seedlings over the next 4 years (Forests for Tomorrow program).
- Reforest areas affected by wildfire and pine beetle.
Protect water
- 10-year commitment to flood prevention, including $100M for flood protection.
- Conservation goal of 50% of new municipal demand is met via conservation by 2020.
- Increase water monitoring stations and public education on drinking water.
Build carbon smart communities
- All new development on flood plains will be flood-proofed.
- Recognize climate change impacts in awarding infrastructure grants.
- Develop comprehensive plan for green community development.
- Ensure community development strategies recognize the importance of streams and rivers.
